How to Talk to a Parent About Moving Into Senior Care

By Sterling Estates Senior Living

One of the hardest conversations any family member can have is talking to a parent about moving into a care home. Most families avoid it until it’s urgent—but that delay often leads to unnecessary stress, health risks, and fewer choices.

At Sterling Estates, we’ve supported many families through this process. Based on our experience, here are practical tips that make the conversation smoother—and help your loved one feel respected and understood.

1. Start Early—Before It’s an Emergency

The earlier you bring up the topic, the better. Waiting until there’s a fall, hospitalization, or caregiver burnout limits your options. Starting early shows you care enough to plan ahead, not just react when it’s too late.

2. Focus on Their Needs, Not Your Fears

Avoid leading with statements like “We’re worried about you” or “You can’t live alone anymore.”
Instead, ask questions like:

  • “How are you feeling managing everything at home?”
  • “Do you feel safe cooking, bathing, or taking medications?”
  • “Would it be easier if you had some help around the clock?”

Framing the conversation around their comfort and independence reduces resistance.

3. Tour Together, Don’t Decide For Them

Invite your parent to visit places with you. Let them meet the caregivers, tour the rooms, and experience the environment.
At Sterling Estates, we offer private tours in both our Antioch and Concord locations so families can see firsthand what life feels like in a small, family-like setting.

4. Why Smaller Homes Like Sterling Estates Offer Better Safety and Peace of Mind

In large assisted living facilities with 50 to over 100 residents, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. Staffing ratios often stretch to 1 caregiver for every 15 to 25 residents, meaning long wait times for help—especially at night.

In fact, our owner—who also works as a licensed paramedic right here in Contra Costa County—has personally responded to emergency calls where residents had fallen and laid on the floor for hours, unnoticed, waiting for someone to check on them. It’s a heartbreaking reality in many larger facilities with stretched staffing.

At Sterling Estates, our 1 caregiver for every 3 to 6 residents ratio means:

  • Residents are never left unseen or unheard
  • Help is immediate and personal
  • Care feels like family, not a system

5. Reassure Them It’s Not a Lock-In

Make it clear that moving to a care home doesn’t mean losing control of their life.
Offer short-term stays or “trial visits” if they’re open to it.
We offer respite care at Sterling Estates for exactly this reason—to let families and residents experience the difference without pressure.
